Statement on the Life of John Bruton

It is with great sadness that we share with you the peaceful passing of John Macaulay Bruton on June 16, 2021, in New Orleans. John was the first employee of ManattJones Global Strategies (now Monarch Global Strategies) in Mexico, where he was Managing Director and ran our Mexico City office for over a decade. As Monarch Chairman Ambassador Jim Jones has noted, “Without John’s enthusiasm, vision and hard work, Monarch would not have had nearly the success we have enjoyed over the last 21 years.”

John was born a U.S. citizen in Mexico City in 1937 and dedicated his life to advancing the U.S.- Mexico relationship in every aspect, including commercial, political and social, and he did so through both his professional achievements and his philanthropy.

Before joining ManattJones, John spent over thirty years fostering U.S.-Mexico business ties at the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico, the largest such organization outside of the U.S., where he was CEO and worked to encourage the passage of NAFTA and to ensure its success. John’s efforts to promote stronger U.S.-Mexico relations earned him the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest award that the Government of Mexico bestows on foreigners.

“John’s insights, commitment and passion for Mexico were unmatched, and the bilateral relationship has lost one of its great champions,” said Monarch CEO Michael Camuñez.

His enthusiastic community involvement extended to many areas and enriched organizations such as Christ Church, the American Benevolent Society, the American British Cowdray (ABC) Hospital, the University Club, the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería and Fomento Educacional, all of which benefited greatly from his leadership, mentorship, insightfulness and, above all, his kindness, joyfulness and friendship.

Our hearts go out to his cherished wife Frances and their children Alex, Mac and Brinley, as well as to his grandchildren and the rest of his family.

Having lived a full and happy life with permanent ties on both sides of the border and friends around the world, John will be missed in New Orleans, Mexico and throughout.
